The transfer rumour mill is going off the charts right now. Every 5 minutes, a new star is linked with a new club and it’s hard to keep up but we’re trying to stay as on top of things as humanly possible. We’ve caught wind of a few new hot topics including some confirmed signings hot off the press.
Rumour has it…
Harry Maguire may not have experienced much love last season but he’s certainly felt it over the past couple of days. Having tied the knot in a lavish wedding ceremony with long-time partner Fern in a French chateau this weekend, he has jetted off on his honeymoon amid a swirl of rumours that Barcelona want a piece of him.
Yes, according to some chats blowing over from Spain to England, the Catalan club want the big centre-back as part of any deal for Frenkie de Jong – but Manchester United love their error-prone cult-villain so much they have told Barça manager Xavi to keep his hands off their man. All this means that Barça’s midfield’s maestro De Jong will cost United the full price of £69m, with the club still in the driving seat to sign him. Reports that Phil Jones is next on Xavi’s wishlist are much harder to believe.
Thomas Tuchel really needs to fill the huge void in the centre of his Chelsea defence after the departures of Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. He hopes to do so by sending Timo Werner and £38m to Juventus in exchange for Matthijs de Ligt. They may even try to throw in Christian Pulisic, too. The Dutchman has a £103m release clause in his contract and it is thought the Serie A club would prefer a cash-only transfer. It’s the kind of pricey deal Chelsea technical director Petr Cech would probably advise against, but he’s leaving Stamford Bridge so new owner Todd Boehly will have the final say. The American needs to make some moves fast before the market dries up and Chelsea finds themselves defenderless.
West Ham are all over this summer’s transfer window and look to make some big money moves after qualifying for European football after a great season. Not content with signing Nayef Aguerd in defence, they still hope to add speedy Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma and proper No 9 Armando Broja from Chelsea for around £30m apiece. They have also made a contract offer to free agent and top, top celebrator of goals, Jesse Lingard, who had a happy time on loan at the London Stadium last year. And David Moyes will spend around £10m on goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, who they borrowed off PSG last season.
Jürgen Klopp is happy to wait a season to bolster Liverpool’s midfield ranks but when he does he will use his contacts at Borussia Dortmund to thrash out a deal for Jude Bellingham. The club believe the Germans will be more keen to chat about a transfer next summer than they are right now.
Bayern Munich have told Barcelona that they will have to get £52m together for Robert Lewandowski, which seems a fair old chunk of cash for a 33-year-old striker, but we’d back him to score at least 1,5 million goals in La Liga next season so maybe it is good value after all. Okay maybe not that many, but Lewa definitely still has a lot of goals left in him.
Patrick Vieira knows what Crystal Palace need to improve further next season, a player just like him, which is why he’s keen to cut a deal with Lens for box-to-box Mali midfielder Cheick Doucouré, who will cost them somewhere between £15m to £20m and finally Nottingham Forest are hoping to lure Liverpool right-back Neco Williams to the club with a £15m bid. Centre-back Sven Botman is on his way to Newcastle, where he will sign on the dotted line to complete a £35m move from Lille. And Middlesbrough full-back Djed Spence has asked to leave the club, with Tottenham favourites to sign the England Under-21 international.
Chelsea edge closet to Raphinha
Chelsea are close to clinching a £55m deal with Leeds to buy Raphinha after moving in front of Arsenal and Barcelona in the race to sign the Brazil international. The left winger, who has also been a target for Tottenham, is poised to become the second key player to leave Leeds this summer, after Kalvin Phillips, who is joining Manchester City.
Chelsea have opened talks over City’s Raheem Sterling and also want Raphinha as they rebuild their attack. Arsenal, who have agreed a deal to buy Gabriel Jesus from City, have also made attempts to sign Raphinha. However they face the prospect of losing out to Chelsea, who are due to open discussions over personal terms with the 25-year-old. Raphinha’s preference had been to move to Barça, but the La Liga club’s financial crisis has prevented them from matching Leeds’s valuation. That has allowed Chelsea to move in and agree a fee with Leeds, though there could be a twist should Arsenal decide to raise their initial offer and go to £55m as well.
Todd Boehly, Chelsea’s co-owner, is ready to back Thomas Tuchel’s desire to bring in two attacking players. Tuchel has considered moves for Barça’s Ousmane Dembélé and Everton’s Richarlison, whose main interest has come from Tottenham, but the head coach has focused his immediate attention on Raphinha.
Sterling, who has held talks with Tuchel about life at Stamford Bridge, is expected to cost at least £50m. City are expected to receive Chelsea’s opening offer for the England forward this week.
Chelsea need to improve their quality in the final third and have agreed to loan Romelu Lukaku to Internazionale. Tuchel would like to build a more versatile attack and Raphinha, who can play in a number of roles across the front line, could be some smart business.
Tuchel is still monitoring Dembélé, who could leave Barcelona on a free. The France winger has not agreed to extend his contract and wants to decide on his future soon. However, his wage demands could be too high for Chelsea, who are yet to make an approach for Richarlison.
